Lavaman

A crazy couple of days! Yesterday was the Lavaman race and Alaskans dominated the podium at the finish! Two of our top local women were 2nd and 3rd overall on the stands with the pros!! A ton of other people also finished in the top 5 of their age groups.

Elizabeth was a champ and decided to do the race before being rushed to the airport to catch a flight back to Anchorage to be with her sister and family. We didn't get any pictures of her after the race because we couldn't find her and a friend had said she went back to the condo to get ready to leave. She had a great race and PR'd by 12 or so minutes!

In my opinion, Jason did incredible with a 2:14! He improved his time by 6 minutes over last year. The guys in his age group were really fast this year whereas the people in my age group were about the same as last year. Plus, Jason was sick leading up to the race, so he really did exceptionally well. He suffered from a horrible side stitch on the run and even had to stop. Neither one of us felt great about our race but Jason was a lot more positive about it than me, I was really dissapointed. We both were not where we thought we'd be. I'm not really sure what happened if it was the heat, a bit of overtraining before the race or just not tappering as much as we might have if this was our "A" race. Either way, it was a great learning lesson on what not to do leading up to a race. :) Bad races make you appreciate the good ones! My time was 2:34 and some change....it was enough to get on the podium in 4th place in my age group although I didn't feel I deserved it after that performance. My bike and run times were completely off but I am happy with my slow swim time, I'm making improvments little by little!
After the race, probably 50 or so Alaskans went to Kona for dinner to celebrate, it was fun!
